Album Info:On December 30-31, 2020, San Diego Electric Railway 502 was moved from its long time home in the company of two other streetcars in Colfax, CA to the Western Railway Museum in Suisun City, CA. Out of all the artifacts the Western Railway Museum may come to own, this car has got to have one of the most interesting stories and is a true survivor. 1937: built by the St. Louis Car Company in Missouri and delivered to the San Diego Electric Railway (SDERy) as the first PCC type streetcar on the west coast. 1950: Sold to El Paso City Lines after being put into storage when the SDERy abandoned streetcar service in 1949 and used on a cross border streetcar line into Mexico. Imagine that this day in age when border security always seems to be a hot topic... 1974: Placed in outdoor storage at the El Paso Airport after El Paso City Lines discontinued streetcar service. 1986: Returned to San Diego by a railfan group which had purchased the car hoping to restore it for service on the city's then new light rail system as a tourist attraction, only to have their dreams shattered by an arson fire which increased the price of restoration beyond their resources. 1996: Sold to a private owner who collected a fleet of streetcars and wanted to build a line between the Lake Tahoe Airport and the casinos and beaches at South Lake Tahoe.The plans never got very far and the car was stored outdoors near the airport and later in the owner's backyard in Colfax. 2017: Noticed for sale on a railroad equipment website by a museum volunteer aware of its history. 2020: Purchased by the Bay Area Electric Railway Association and moved to the museum amid a global pandemic and arrived on New Year's Eve when the deadline to get the car out of Colfax was the end of the year.
